Gliding and the weather

Gliding is a weather dependant sport, and occasionally this means non-flying days. Most often these are caused by high winds, heavy rains or a water logged landing strip.

To help prevent people arriving on a non flying day, we advertise the current flying and weather status using the telephone and internet. A message is left on our answering service each morning advising the weather conditions and flying status. As such, if you plan on flying on a particular day it is generally a good idea to call in advance.

You can call Southern Cross Gliding Club on (02) 4655 8882. The first few rings divert to our field mobile phone so if someone answers, chances are we are flying and can give you the latest weather forecast. Alternatively after a few more rings the phone will redivert to our answering service. A daily message is placed on this service, containing the weather conditions and flying status.

We also advise the weather situation using this page. Check back here for current flying information and weather updates.

It is worth noting that the weather in Camden can vary greatly from the weather in Sydney. The coast has a much greater rainfall pattern than Camden, so often when its raining in the city, its a great day just on the outskirts.

Predicting the thermal conditions can be somewhat trickier. Most people assume that a bright sunny day is needed to have a good soaring day, however this always isn't the case. Cloudy days often provide some of the best soaring conditions, and normal (non-extreme) windy days can be good as well. Unfortunately overcast rainy days are only good for the local farmers.
