Learning to Fly

Getting ready for takeoff

Ready for takeoff

Almost anybody can learn to fly a glider. Our members range in ages from their teens to the mid-seventies. Provided you are in good health, of average height, and are under the placarded weight limitations of our gliders (110kg in the DG-1000 and IS-28s and 100kg in the ASK-13), there is every reason to consider beginning gliding. If you have previous experience with ultralights or light aircraft, these skills will certainly speed your learning, but for many of our members, gliding is their first adventure in flight.

All instruction is carried out in dual control, two-seat gliders with qualified instructors. Once solo standard is achieved, our fleet includes higher performance models available for more advanced, competition, aerobatic or cross-country training. Gliders are launched by one of our 3 Pawnee tugs, providing a fast and efficient system capable of operating in most weather conditions, all year round.

Unlike other forms of aviation, gliding instruction is practical in nature. There are no complex exams to complete, and no specified number of hours of training required. As your proficiency increases, your instructor will gradually let you do more and more of the flying. When you can demonstrate your proficiently in all the pre-solo flight training sequences, your instructor sends you solo - absolutely AWESOME !

Best of all, instruction is free! All you to pay for is the cost of the aerotow launch and the hire of the glider for the duration of your flight. To learn to fly you must first become a member of the Club. We currently offer some excellent package deals to get you started. These include either 5 or 10 prepaid flights, a log book, and 3 months GFA and Club Membership.

Restrictions:

In order to comply with weight and balance requirements and operate safely within the certified operational parameters of our aircraft, we maintain the right to determine each person's suitability for our aircraft, and to decline flying privileges to ensure the safety of our aircraft and members.
