Booking the flight

Weekends can be particularly busy, so, in order to avoid long delays, it is preferable to book beforehand a time slot for your flight. This can be done at the time you purchase your ticket, or at any time up to the day before your flight. We request you arrive at the airfield at least 30 minutes before your allotted flight time, and make your presence known to the duty pilot.

For weekend bookings please go to our booking page by clicking here

To book a flight midweek, please call our bookings officer on 0425 281 450

As gliding is a weather dependent sport, we cannot guarantee that your flight will take place at the alloted time, however, we will try to our best ability to keep to the schedule.

In the event of inclement weather, on weekends there is normally a mobile phone in the pie cart (0402) 055-093. Alternatively you can call the bookings officer on 0425 281 450

Do I really need to book? Can I just turn up?

It is not necessary to book a flight, and we will do our best to accomodate passengers without prior bookings on a first-come, first-served basis, however passengers having bookings will take priority over those who do not.

Taking flight

Before flying, the duty pilot will arrange for you to fill in some paperwork. When the glider and your instructor are ready, you will be given a briefing on the aircraft and its controls and then strapped in ready for take-off. The aircraft is one of our two seat trainers with full controls and instruments in front and rear seats. Normally you sit in the front seat with the instructor behind you to get the best view, however, you may prefer to sit in the back. You can choose. For the flight you are towed to 3000ft. The instructor will demonstrate how the glider is controlled. If you wish, under his guidance, he will talk you through a few gentle turns. You will be surprised how easy it is to control the glider. When it is time to prepare for landing, the instructor will take over the controls again. Depending on the prevailing weather conditions, your flight will typically last between 20 and 30 minutes. After you land, you will be presented with a certificate commemorating your flight.

Can anybody fly?

In order to comply with weight and balance requirements and operate safely within the certified operational parameters of our aircraft, we maintain the right to determine each person's suitability for our aircraft, and to decline flying privileges to ensure the safety of our aircraft and members.

As a guide, an AEF passenger needs to be:

  • In good health - you must never have suffered from epilepsy, fits, severe head injury, recurrent fainting, giddiness, blackouts, abnormally high blood pressure or previous heart disease. You must not be taking insulin for the control of diabetes. If you have suffered from any of these, a medical certificate from a suitably qualified doctor stating you are cleared to fly will need to be produced prior to take-off.
  • At least 12 years old - younger children may get distressed when flying, especially without a familiar adult present.
  • Weight less than 100 kg. While certain of our gliders can carry passengers up to 110kg, that also depends on having a light enough instructor in the other seat. We can't always ensure the presence of such an instructor on every flying day, and of course we'd prefer to not have to turn people away or cause embarassment. Please call us well beforehand and we may be able to arrange a particular instructor (or advise you of days when he will be present).

My flight was great ! What next?

In addition to your initial AEF flight, you may take a further 2 flights within 3 months for a reduced rate (i.e. presently $110.00 per flight). Just bring along your certificate. Please note that these additional flights are NOT transferrable to another person.

If you then decide that you like gliding and would like to join the Club and learn to fly, we offer a choice of package deals which will get you started.

Why not take home a memento of your flight? We sell a great range of caps, T-shirts and fleecies at a very reasonable rate.

Need more information ?

Note Remember that gliding is a volunteer run, and weather dependent sport, and sometimes delays are unavoidable, especially at busy times. Please be patient; any wait will certainly be worth it.

I weigh 110kg. Is that a problem?

We do have gliders that are capable of flying passengers of up to 110kg.
If you are over 100kg, please advise us at the time of making your booking, and we will try to accomodate you, however please note this may not always be possible due to aircraft or instructor availability.
If you weigh over 110kg, we unfortunately will not be able to take you for a flight, as this exceeds the legal weight limit for gliders
